Attempting to put my biased opinions on smoking aside, I think that smoking should be banned on all government properties. Parks, municipal properties, sidewalks, you name it. I think that 95% of the smoking population do know the health effects of smoking and second hand smoking, and thereby should be considerate to others who choose not to partake in the activity. I am so sick of walking down the street and inhaling immense amounts of smoke. Just because you decided to smoke doesn’t mean if I should get a serious injury not be given a hospital bed because of your chronic CVD and lung cancer. Besides the health affects of smoking, the environmental pollution aspect of it is something to be considered as well. Just because you choose to pollute your indoor or outdoor living environment, does not give you the right to pollute my outdoor living environment.
Putting my health background aside, I actually have little ethical issues with the tobacco industry; everyone has to make a living and there are many many products out there that can harm you. I don’t think limiting where people smoke would have an impact on the tobacco industry because people are going to do it anyways; if anything people may just do it more because of the new “allure”. From a government point of view, making it illegal to smoke on public property would make one hell of a killing and maybe we could finally lower our taxes.
I’m sorry if this offends anybody, but it is just my opinion.
